Papers of the Davenport family, 1838-1912.

The collection consists chiefly of notebooks kept by Henry B. Davenport, Jr., a student at R.P.I. and a lawyer in Clay Court House, W. Va. Topics include the study of topographical drawing, railway engineering and hydraulics; coal mining in Clay County, West Virginia, 1903-1912; cash collections, 1898-1912; and personal bank book, 1894-1897. The collection also contains a memorandum book of Elizabeth Bedinger Davenport, Charlestown, [W.] Va. containing genealogy notes, family notes, expenses, and notes on the spinning, dying and fulling of cloth, 1838-1851. Many of the entries concern clothing for slaves. Also commonplace books of household and garden recipes kept by Martha S. Clay, 1851-1873, and Amelia C. Davenport, 1898; a photograph of Stella Carden; and some moot court notes for the University of Virginia School of Law, 1895.
